Kerala University Library
Established in 1942, Kerala University Library (KUL) is not only the oldest but is also the largest university library found in Kerala. Housing more than 3,50,000 books, the library is situated next to the University Senate Hall campus in the Thiruvananthapuram city. Besides this it also subscribes around 500 journals, periodicals and magazines and offers services such as UGC Infonet. The Library in Kerala is as well popular for Kerala Studies, Women’s Studies, Government Publications, General Biographies, UN and World Bank Publications, bound volumes of newspapers and journals and rare books. At present it being in the process of digitizing its rare collections it is also the sole library in the state that serves as a depository of UN and World Bank publications. On an average 1000 to 1250 students, research scholars and teachers visiting it regularly, it currently serves as the major centre of research and study in Kerala. The present library building, a two storied structure with a total plinth area of 53,000 Sq.ft., started functioning on 8th September 1962. The post of a Professional Librarian to be in full administrative charge of the Library was created in 1959 and Prof. K. A. Isaac was appointed to the post in August 1959. He continued to be the University Librarian until 1980 and he was succeeded by Sri. K. C. John. Bibliographic services, Current awareness service, E- Journal services, Indexing services, Internet services, OPAC search, Referral service, User Education programmes, CD-ROM search, Current Content services, Extension services, Inter library loan services, Lending of Books, Reference service, Reprographic services and World Bank e-Library service are the various types of services offered by the Library in Kerala.
