Roja Muthiah Research Library took birth in 1994 as a vast collection that reflects Tamil print heritage and culture. It was conceived to protect the records and enlarge the collected works of Roja Muthiah Chettiyar, a private collector who had put jointly one of the world’s finest private libraries of Tamil publications during his lifetime. Known to be one among the best Libraries in Chennai, RMRL at present is the store house of some of the most outstanding and unique Tamil collections found in complete South Asia. Some of its records even date back to eighteenth century. Housing around 2 50000 items, Roja Muthiah Research Library offers facilities and research materials for research scholars of Tamil studies. Muthiah began his career as a sign-board artist and soon became enthralled by antiquarian books. and started collecting classical Tamil literature in 1950. At the time of his death in 1992, the collection comprised nearly 1,00,000 items in Tamil which included books, periodicals and several other literary gems. Understanding the significance of the library and the need to preserve its valuable contents the University of Chicago bought the entire collection in 1994. However, with the library being deeply rooted in south Indian culture and tradition, it was decided that the collection would remain in Tamil Nadu to form the nucleus of a research library. RMRL Trust now maintains this rare private collection of Tamil imprints in collaboration with the University of Chicago.
